Jeanie Deans May 2025

I attended the first performance at Lancefield, such dedicated cast and the accompanist Aisha Bowker did a sterling job. Looking forward to next opera.

It was an amazing show - such dramatic ideas and massive music by so few people in such a small space. A very rich performance. Some of the vocal melodic intervals and timings were very challenging and unexpected- kept my ear focused! People were very committed to their roles and ensured a convoluted story made sense! Amazing effort by one pianist to play that score - she is a treasure as you know. As for Mr. Campbell - two major roles accomplished with excellence and professional aplomb. Never anything less, of course. You have done something very special Stee, stepping out of the square, taking a risk, resurrecting this opera and creating an Australian Premiere. You are a gifted producer.

The costuming was superb - bright, colorful and well crafted.

The cast were exceptionally lead by David Campbell and the Savoy Orchestra.

Tim Daly’s voice shon, his seamlessly rich tenor sound pinging out into the audience.

The immediate draw that the title character, played by  Jayne Pickering, had on the audience was impressive - her ability to tackle this complex character only matched by her vocal skill.

The quartet moment in the final act allowed members of the chorus shine - a beautifully balanced and well rehearsed moment in the score that really showcased the talent embedded throughout the cast.

A final mention to Merrin Torpey for a wonderfully convincing portrayal of the maid - a stunningly rich mezzo instrument.

A wonderful rendition of an Australian Premiere enjoyed by all. Well done to director Stee and the amazing cast of Jeanie Deans.
